Police declare self-confessed killer of Rimi's wife insane

A 30-year-old man, Malam Jibrin Tasiu Zagge, who confessed role in the murder of Hajiya Sa'adatu, wife of Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, is a lunatic, the police have said.

A 30-year-old man, Malam Jibrin Tasiu Zagge, who confessed role in the murder of Hajiya Sa'adatu, wife of Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, is a lunatic, the police have said.

A few days after the incident, Zagge, a Kano resident, rode in Jincheng motorcycle to Rimi's residence at Durbin Katsina, where he told mourners that he took part in Sa'adatu's murder.

But a member of the police investigative team, who asked not to be named, said yesterday that: "We found out that that man who said he participated in the killing has a mental case. We sent him to a doctor who confirmed that he is not a normal person."

He, however, revealed that the man and another, described by the policeman as a "dreamer," are among 17 persons still chatting with the interrogators. The officer assured that the police would leave no stone unturned to unearth the assailants.

The Guardian learnt that the investigative team dismissed the claim by an unidentified man, who said he had identified the killer through a dream.

The official said: "We also discovered that the so-called dreamer wanted to implicate his master who owed him some money. So, he felt that the only way to get at his master is to say he killed Rimi's wife."

On the notion that there is more to the death of Malam Adamu, the eldest son of Rimi, after the murder of Sa'adatu, the detective said the demise of the 43-year-old Adamu, a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, should be considered as normal, adding that "anybody can die anytime. Nobody knows when death would come knocking at his or her doors."

The official expressed optimism that the investigative team would make headway when the result of forensic samples taken from the spot of the crime is submitted to the investigative panel.

Lamenting the dastardly manner Rimi's wife was killed, the policeman restated the panel's resolve to give N5 million to anybody who comes forth with useful clue that can lead to the arrest of the assassins.

Zagge had arrived the former governor of old Kano State's House at 10.30 a.m. and walked straight into the midst of mourners, screaming: "I am part of those who conspired to kill her. I have not been at peace with myself since the incident. I couldn't sleep since then. I thought of killing myself but I feel I should come and confess the sin first."

He was immediately arrested by armed policemen attached to the politician's residence.

The self-confessed murderer was later interrogated by the special investigative team from the Force Headquarters headed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Mr. Ogbonna Onovo.

The team, which also questioned a Kano prince, a businessman and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and 13 others, including members of Rimi's household, is yet to unmask the killers of 48-year-old Sa'adatu.
