Armed gang attack Agip Nigeria office, 11 dead

An armed gang dressed in police uniform attacked the offices of Agip oil company, a unit of Italy's ENI, in Nigeria on Tuesday and 11 people were killed, security and government sources said.

An armed gang dressed in police uniform attacked the offices of Agip oil company, a unit of Italy's ENI, in Nigeria on Tuesday and 11 people were killed, security and government sources said.

It was not immediately clear if the attack was by the same militant group which is holding four foreign hostages and has staged a series of attacks on oil facilities in the world's eighth largest exporter over the past month.

"There was a massive attack on the Agip offices in Port Harcourt. Nine police and two others were killed," a government source said, asking not to be named.

The group of about 30 men, armed with AK-47 assault rifles, arrived at the company's compound in two speed boats, engaged police in a lengthy shootout and successfully robbed a bank within the premises, he added.

An Agip spokesman in Nigeria confirmed there was an "incident" at the company's offices in Port Harcourt, the hub of Nigeria's oil industry, but declined further comment.

A police spokesman in the city also confirmed the attack but said she did not have further information.
