A previously unheard-of group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of four foreign oil workers, including a Bulgarian, from an offshore oilfield in Nigeria.
In an e-mail message, whose authenticity has not been verified, the group, calling itself the Martyrs' Brigade, demands for the release from prison of a former governor from a state in the southern delta of Niger.
The group, which says to be a breakaway faction of the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force, also claimed responsibility for the attack on the pipeline operated by Royal Dutch Shell, for which the four hostages worked.
All four hostages, who are believed to be Bulgarian Milko Nichev, a Honduran, an American and a Briton, were employed by Nigerian company Tidex, which is a subsidiary of the American company.
At the time of the attack on Wednesday, the four hostages were working on a ship servicing the oilfield, located a few miles off the coast of the southern Niger Delta and operated by Royal Dutch Shell.
