The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has confirmed that no fewer than 865 persons died in 4,854 road traffic accidents last year in Lagos State. Lagos Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Ayobami Omiyale, said this marked an increase of 43 deaths over last yearâ??s.

The breakdown showed that 7001 vehicles were involved in motor accidents in 2005, down from 7,507 in 2004.
Omiyale said in five years, beginning from 2001, 4,049 persons had died in 23,346 road accidents with 12,907 injuries, while 32,718 vehicles were involved.
He said between September and December 2005, a significant reduction in road traffic accidents, deaths and injuries were recorded.
The Sector Commander said 1,338 accidents occurred during the period, while 264 deaths and 793 injuries were recorded as against 1,826 accidents, 302 deaths and 1,143 injuries in the ember months of 2004.
In 2001, there were 777 deaths in 3,934 road traffic accidents involving 4,567 vehicles, while in 2002 there wer 776 deaths in 4,527 road accidents involving 6,442 vehicles.
Omiyale saidt 809 persons died in 2003 in 5,010 road traffic accidents in which 7,171 vehicles were involved.
He expressed happiness that in spite of the fact that the crash of a Bellview plane and Sosoliso forced more people to travel by road during the 2005 ember months, there was still a reduction in the number of road accidents, deaths and injuries.
Omiyale attributed the development to intensified public enlightenment campaigns on road safety by the Commission.
