Ogbeh, Rimi, Na’Abba others resign from PDP at last

Chief Audu Ogbeh and 12 other members of the Movement for the Defence of Democracy (MDD) have formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Chief Audu Ogbeh and 12 other members of the Movement for the Defence of Democracy (MDD) have formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Others who resigned their membership from the party are former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’ Abba, Second Republic Governor of Kano State, Abubakar Rimi, erstwhile Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi and former Minister of State Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Onyia.

The group, in a letter to the National Chairman of the PDP, Senator Ahmadu Ali and dated December 14, listed former Minister of State for Women Affairs, Miss Funke Adedoyin, Senator Joseph Waku, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, Ambassador Yahaya Kwande, Dr. Farouk Abdulaziz and Barr Umar Shittien as having resigned as well.

The decision to leave the party, they claimed, was as a result of what “We consider to be trends and developments in the recent past which have so denatured the party we formed, that we can no longer recognize it.”

The also attributed their departure from the party to “the several actions by the PDP leadership totally contemptuous of the party’s and the Nigerian Constitution and the courts, including tendentious maneuverings all aimed at serving particular and sometimes personal interests.”

The letter read in part thus: “We, the under listed wish to inform you of our decision to resign from the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today December 16, 2006.

“We have reached this decision in view of what we consider to be traits and development in the recent past which have so denatured the party we formed, that we can no longer recognize it.
“Among these are several actions totally contemptuous of the party’s and the Nigerian Constitution and the Courts, including tendentious manoeverings all aimed at serving a particular and sometimes personal interests.

“Since our views on democracy and governance no longer coincide, we cannot continue to co-habit under the same umbrella.”
Ogbeh, the immediate past chairman of the party, has been the arrow-head of the MDD and the MRD which is expected to morph into a political party.
