She lived in mortal fear of death. In fact, she confessed in a frank interview that she was always thinking of that eventuality, till she gave her life to Jesus Christ in 1978. But last Saturday, in a Sosoliso airliner crash that occurred in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, her worst fears came to pass. Tele-preacher and marriage counsellor, Pastor Bimbo Odukoya was among the 107 people that lost their lives.
Odukoya, who through her ministry was instrumental to the repair of countless homes, had told Genevieve magazine the story of her conversion, in an interview published in March, this year:
"It was in 1978 at Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos, but before then, I had always loved the Lord. Even when I was in Holy Child, a Catholic School, I had told God that I was willing to be a reverend sister. At the time, I was a very fearful person, always thinking of death. Although, I would attend parties, go out with my friends, go to church, say my prayers, go for confession, I still felt that there was something missing. At FGC I started attending fellowship and although many ministers came and preached, it was a message on life after death that really got to me, probably because of my fear of death. There and then, I judged myself and I knew that if I should die, I would not make heaven because I was not living for God. That day, I made the decision to give my life to Christ and I did."
Bimbo went on to read History at the University of Ibadan, and it was there that she met Taiwo Odukoya, who was later to become her husband. They both later founded the Fountain of Life Church, in Ilupeju, Lagos. While the husband was senior pastor, she was his associate. They were blessed with three children, two girls and a boy.
Asked if she endorsed Christians going into politics, Odokoya said yes. But would she personally do so?
"I do not intend to go into politics," she replied. "But if God tells me to in future, I would. I would do anything to serve God and my nation, but as of now I have no such intentions." Now, that future will never come. Sad.
Her life's philosophy, she gave as "following the instructions of Christ, who is the greatest leader that has ever lived."
