Nigeria sends crashed plane`s voice, data recorders to UK

Investigators probing last Saturday`s crash of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 jetliner in Nigeria`s southern city of Port Harcourt have sent the cockpit voice and flight data recorders to the UK "for reading and analysis".

Lagos, Nigeria, 12/13 - Investigators probing last Saturday`s crash of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 jetliner in Nigeria`s southern city of Port Harcourt have sent the cockpit voice and flight data recorders to the UK "for reading and analysis".

Officials of the Nigerian accident investigation bureau told journalists in the state`s capital Monday that the outcome of the analysis would provide an insight into the cause of the crash.

The private Sosoliso Airlines plane crash claimed 107 lives, including dozens of school children travelling home for Christmas holidays.

The police found the flight data recorder at the crash site, while the investigators themselves later recovered the cockpit voice recorder.

US investigators already in Nigeria for the 22 October crash of a Boeing 737 operated by another local airlines, Bellview, have joined their Nigerian counterparts at the scene of the latest crash.

The investigators said they plan to interview ground officials at the Port Harcourt airport as well as eyewitnesses, before handing over the airport to its authorities.

The Port Harcourt airport has been shut since the crash, which spread debris over a wide area along the runway.
