A Nigerian passenger jet crashed Saturday in the southern city of Port Harcourt, an aviation official said. It was not immediately known how many people were on board, but media reports said many passengers were killed.

LAGOS, Nigeria - A Nigerian passenger jet crashed Saturday in the southern city of Port Harcourt, an aviation official said. It was not immediately known how many people were on board, but media reports said many passengers were killed.

Sam Adurogboye, spokesman for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, said: "Yes, there was a crash ... We are trying to establish contact with Port Harcourt. I don't have details on the accident for now."

Radio station Rhythm FM said a Sosoliso Airlines plane "crash landed and burst into flames." It did not elaborate.

A Nigerian television station displayed a brief text saying: "an aircraft belonging to Sosoliso Airlines has crashed in Port Harcourt - details later."

Nigerian airline Aerocontractors issued a statement on Rhythm FM to "express sympathy with the families and friends for today's air crash in Port Harcourt."

Nigerian-owned Sosoliso Airlines was established in 1994. It began scheduled flights as a domestic airline in July 2000 and now flies to six Nigerian cities, according to its Web site.
