What's the latest development on Chief Gani Adams?

We've only been following the developments as reported in the papers. We know that they were, at different times, brought to the court and their cases adjourned. We can only watch events as they unfold.

Have you been able to have access to him since he was picked up?

I've not been able to reach him since the last time I was denied access. He was in Alagbon (in Lagos) at the time. Our lawyer was able to gain access to him after he was transferred to Abuja. So, we've only been communicating with our lawyer and monitoring the media to keep up with events and know how things are with him.

From what you've gathered so far, how is life with him out there?

He was still healthy when our lawyer saw him. But you know, it's not easy to be denied your freedom of movement and be kept in a cell and still remain in sound health all the time. He can't possibly be as healthy as he'd be if he were at home, living a normal life. He can't possibly be fed the kind of food he normally eats at home. That's why I'm appealing to the government to hasten the trial while also applying justice and fairness in dealing with it. I know that this country is a free country. So, my husband should not be denied his fundamental rights.

Has there been any application for bail by the lawyer?

He was initially released on bail unconditionally on November 14 but was re-arrested on November 15. Since then, we've been waiting for him to appear in court so we can apply for bail. We definitely plan to apply for bail.
On the Iyana-Ipaja mayhem, the case was dismissed when they found that they did not have any evidence to nail him. The second time they came, they searched the house for firearms but none was found. His prayer room was also searched. They took the search to my shop but nothing was found. Of course, I wonder what they expected to find from a housewife's shop. That's how low they went. But we thank God for being on our side.

How about those arrested with him?

My brother-in-law, Bode Akeju had only just arrived from Akungba about four days before the arrest to collect his school fees. We kept the issue of his brother's arrest from him, thinking it would be a minor case and that he would be released. We had to tell him three days later when he became suspicious. My personal driver was arrested as well as the Baale of this community (the latter has since been released). That's why I still appeal to the government to be fair in handling this issue. I believe they brought up the firearms charge after they discovered that they had no case after the initial arrest. They should apply justice in prosecuting the case instead of politicising it.

If they are bringing politics into it, it will be very unfortunate. My husband is only an activist and there is no crime in that. Anybody can be an activist. He has never supported a politician against another nor a political party against another. He's just an activist trying to bring issues concerning his people to the fore.

There's no doubt that things have never been the same with us since he (Adams) was arrested, and they won't be the same as long as he remains there. He was such a wonderful husband and father. We only pray that nothing ugly happens to him because he's only been preaching for fairness and equity in the country. No, I don't have any regret for being his wife, or that he's been involved in the struggle to make things better for his people. It may be rough today, but I know that with God, he'll be vindicated at last.
