Dariye orders probe into attempt on PDP boss life

Plateau State Governor, Chief Joshua Dariye, has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged attempt on the life of the Chairman of the Ibrahim Mantu-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Jethro Akun.

Plateau State Governor, Chief Joshua Dariye, has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged attempt on the life of the Chairman of the Ibrahim Mantu-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Jethro Akun.

Akun was on Saturday attacked by some armed men in his Kufang residence in Jos in what he described as an assassination bid.

Plateau State Information Commissioner, Mr. Yakubu Datti, who disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Jos on Tuesday, said that it would be unthinkable to insinuate that the state government would involve itself in such an act when it was trying so hard to maintain the hard-earned peace after all the crises that the state had gone through.

Datti, who spoke in reaction to the allegations by the Mantu faction that the state government was responsible for the attack on the chairman, said that the governor had also ordered the police to make their findings known to the public as soon as possible.

Datti described the allegation as part of the game plan to discredit the government and bring it into disrepute so as to achieve a certain objective.

At a press briefing addressed by its deputy chairman, Mr. Raymond Dabo at their secretariat in Jos on Monday, the party said that the attack on Akun was one of the several others unleashed on some notable members of the faction.

He recalled that several of such attempts had been made on the life of their leader and deputy senate president, Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu, adding that their limit had been stretched too far. Dabo said that nobody had monopoly of violence, stressing that as law-abiding citizens their silence should not be taken as act of cowardice.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Isa Adejo, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, told our correspondent on Monday that so far no arrest had been made. He said that investigations were still on going.
