Rambo-styled armed robbery operations have become common place in Akwa Ibom State, according to reports reaching our news desk and the police are said to be having sleepless nights as they battle to keep them at bay.
Most of last week, the dare-devil robbers terrorized, Uyo the state capital, forcing residents to cower in fear and the inability of the police to come with any arrest has not helped matters at all.
The men of the underworld who are terrorizing the State are said to be operating in Jeeps and Skygo motorcycles.
So far, they have successfully raided, Chartered Bank, Prudent Bank and Intercontinental Bank and there are reports that in one of the raids, the robbers stole away in a stand by speed boat..
From what we have been able to piece together, the robbers who struck at the Prudent Bank Uyo numbered no less than 25.
They are said to have left a trail of destruction after engaging police for hours in a shoot out.
When the Telegraph arrived the scene, flying bullets seriously damaged doors, windows and walls.
The robbers hit two Toyota Corolla cars, a 504 station wagon escort vehicle and several other cars and inside sources say the cars may have been damaged beyond repairs.
Residents who spoke to this publication say they are worried stiff by the situation and the fact that the police seems to have no answer to the robberies.
Reliable sources also told the Telegraph that the conversion of Akwa Ibom State into a playground for robbers is gradually leading to calls for the removal of the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Richard Chime.
Ordinary people blame him for failing to come out with a water-tight strategy to cage the rampaging robbers at a time that Governor Victor Attah is working round the clock to provide better living conditions for the masses.
