Atiku opts to use security officer as ADC

Following pressures on Vice President Atiku Abubakar to pick another ADC after the removal of Chief Superintendent of Police, Abdul Yari as his ADC, Alhaji Atiku has informed the Police hierarchy that he will make do with his Security Officer as his next ADC.

ABUJA - Following pressures on Vice President Atiku Abubakar to pick another ADC after the removal of Chief Superintendent of Police, Abdul Yari as his ADC, Alhaji Atiku has informed the Police hierarchy that he will make do with his Security Officer as his next ADC.

The Officer who is of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, is not of equivalent rank with CSP Yari as categorically specified by the Police statement issued last Tuesday.

The disclosure came just as officials of the State Security Services who took the former ADC, CSP Abdul Yari back to their detention facility on Wednesday for more investigation into his alleged security breaches finally handed him over to the Police at Force headquarters yesterday morning.

Presidency sources who confirmed the decision of the Vice President to select his security officer to fill the post of ADC, told Vanguard that Atiku was prepared to continue working without an ADC if the new choice who also serves as his Officer in Charge of Escort was not approved for him. According to the source, his decision to stick with the DSP for the position is based on the fact that the officer has been with him and would be in a position to relate more with him than any new ADC or senior officer that would need time to acclimatize or understand the workings of his office.

Vanguard also gathered that the activities of the removed ADC who hails from Nassarawa State and had been under close monitoring for over a month, was first reported to security agents by a serving governor (names with-held) from one of the middle belt states, who is also eyeing is eyeing the presidency in 2007. Recall that the Vice President on Wednesday rejected the six officers of the rank of CSP that were recommended by the Inspector-general of Police, Sunday Ehindero to him to choose another ADC. His ADC, CSP Abdul Yari Shuyan Lafia had been interrogated and relieved of his position after what a police statement said was ‘‘cumulative security reports.

Continuing the statement said, 'The Inspector-general has been instructed to give to the Vice President six names of Police officers of equivalent rank with Yari of which the Vice President can choose from." 'In the alternative, the Vice President can select any police officer of equivalent rank of his choice while CSP Yari is still being interrogated." Contacted on the matter through phone yesterday, a police source confirmed that CSP Abdul Yari has been returned to the Police by the SSS.
