Copies of Alams' purported resignation letter in circulation

Copies of a letter of resignation purportedly signed by Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State and addressed to President Olusegun Obasanjo were freely distributed in Yenagoa yesterday.

YENAGOA - Copies of a letter of resignation purportedly signed by Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State and  addressed to President Olusegun Obasanjo were freely distributed in Yenagoa yesterday.

The governor first hinted of a fake resignation letter, last Wednesday, when he made a broadcast to the people of the state. According to the letter, entitled, 'I leave my fate in the hands of God and the laws of Nigeria", the governor said he was voluntarily resigning from office with effect from yesterday, adding that by the resignation, his immunity under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been waived to pave the way for unhindered investigations and trial.

'In bowing out of office, I am also mindful of the need to give the people of Bayelsa, whom I love with greatest passion, the opportunity for peaceful governance and development. I am also comforted by the fact, that under my leadership, we have during the past six and a half years, I built institutions, invested in human capital and laid a foundation for peace and sustainable development. I am confident that the momentum for change and growth will fledge on in Bayelsa - the glory of all lands.

'Since the commencement of my present ordeal, a number of things have been said and written. It will suffice to state that, in all these, one has come to the greater realization, that life is an ever-changing rhythm with seasons of low tide and seasons of deluge. At such times of trial and indignity, as I today find myself, it is not unexpected, as William Shakespare reflected, that good works are often interred but evil perceived to have been is often resonated with ovation."

He allegedly expressed remorse for the embarrassment his action brought to the country, Bayelsans and Ijaw, saying that he was deeply sorry and remain contrite. The governor also told the President in the controversial letter that he was leaving his fate to the Almighty God.
