AGAINST the backdrop of alleged plot to assassinate Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the Ijaw nation has warned it would hold the Federal Government responsible should anything happen to him.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday in Yenagoa, President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) Prof Kimse Okoko condemned what he described as the wanton selective persecution of the governor.

He said the Ijaw nation would be the first to condemn their son if indicted and found guilty in a court of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria and called for the return of his seized assets to the Bayelsa State government.

Said he, 'the National Executive Council of the Ijaw National Congress wishes to alert the nation about a plot to assassinate governor Alamieyeseigha by the evil forces. The assassination plot, found also in the 'crack plan is described as ultimate, if the other programmes of destabilization fail. The package include for example: the impeachment of the speaker and deputy, the impeachment of the governor himself, the forceful arrest of the governor by the AIG by any means including kidnapping, externally organized and funded protests in the Bayelsa State capital, freezing of the state allocation, the continued intimidation and harassment of key functionaries of government by the EFCC and finally the declaration of a state of emergency."

Prof Okoko who noted that most of their plans have been implemented and some others still being perfected regretted what he described as Mr. President's unconstitutional withholding of the state allocation for the month of November.

While appealing to all Ijaw to be vigilant, he said it is a call to duty if they must ensure their survival as a people and warned that the federal government would be held responsible if he is assassinated.

In another development, some suspected arsonists, yesterday, threw some explosives into the Yenagoa residence of Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha's aide and one of the top aides in his government and another apartment in the area.

The police spokesman in the state, Mr. Andrew Oborududu (DSP) confirmed to Saturday Vanguard when contacted that the police have arrested two suspects in connection with the incident. He said that the suspects were found with two locally made pistols and other explosives.

The building belonging to the top aide of the governor located at Amarata along the Mbiama-Yenagoa Road was partly damaged but the havoc was minor. It was learnt that the arsonists did not have the opportunity to come very close to the house so they threw the explosive from outside and ran away.
