Why I went to EFCC -Bode George

The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Bode George, on Friday gave reasons why he was at the Economic and Financial Crime Commission's office on Thursday.

The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Bode George, on Friday gave reasons why he was at the Economic and Financial Crime Commission's office on Thursday.

The former chairman of Nigerian Ports Authority said that he was not at the commission because of any financial misconduct in NPA as being alleged in some quarters. He said he went there because of the commission's investigation of a former national officer of the party over alleged N50m fraud.

In a statement which was signed by Mr. Muyiwa Collins, Publicity Secretary, PDP Lagos State, and made available to our correspondent, George said that the immediate National Treasurer of the party, Alhaji Kareto Lawan, had told the EFCC that the money was given to the Security Sub-Committee of the 2002 PDP National Convention headed by him (George).

He said the Chairman of the commission had wanted to visit him in his office to seek clarification, but he chose to visit the commission's office as a mark of respect.

He said that Lawan did not give him or any member of the party N50m or ‘any money whatsoever to the Security Sub Committee of the 2002 PDP National Convention."

He said he had no case with the EFCC or any other agent of the law, adding that it was his political opponents who capitalised on the visit and were bent on misinforming the members of the public.
