Robbers shoot Police Inspector in Lagos


A Police Inspector identified as Joseph Okolo was yesterday in Lagos shot and seriously wounded by a gang of armed robbers that attacked a team of anti-robbery squad at Iba area of the state.

LAGOS - A Police Inspector identified as Joseph Okolo was yesterday in Lagos shot and seriously wounded by a gang of armed robbers that attacked a team of anti-robbery squad at Iba area of the state.

The Inspector and his team which was led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police ASP Aneke were on regular patrol at Iba-Igando road when they were unexpectedly confronted by a gang of dare-devil robbers. The hoodlums sources said upon sighting the police, opened fire on them while the team responded. Sources said the bandits who were armed with sophisticated weapons withstood the police fire for fire for several minutes during which the Inspector was hit by the robbers' bullets in his leg causing him to slump on the spot. But his team leader sources hinted further, promptly came to his rescue following which he was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) where doctors battled to extract the pellets lodged in his leg.

Attempt to get the reaction of the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Mr. Olabode Ojajuni on the shooting incident failed as he was said to be out on official assignment. But a source closed to the Ojo Division where the incident was being investigated said no arrest was made yet as the hoodlums successfully shot their way through during the cross fire 'the incident happened at about 2350 hrs while ASP Aneke and team attached to this Division were on patrol along Iba-Igando road. The team from what we were told exchanged gunfire with a group of armed robbers during which Inspector Okolo Joseph a member of the team was shot in his leg. He was rushed to LASUTH immediately for treatment and has since been discharged. We are investigating the incident with a view to tracking the hoodlums down because they were able to shoot their way through during the exchange of gun fire," source said.
