YENAGOA - THE arrival of the Bayelsa State governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, in Nigeria in the early hours of yesterday was to nip in the bud an alleged plan by the State House of Assembly to commence his impeachment today (Tuesday).
Vanguard gathered authoritatively that some members of the House had concluded plans to commence the impeachment process on the governor today and that it was because of the security report made available to him that the governor took the risk to return home to abort the plan.
But the new Speaker, Hon Peremobowei Ebebi, had on several occasions in the past said the House had no intention to impeach the governor but to empower the Deputy Governor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to function as Acting Governor.
It was, however, learnt that with the way the whole thing (impeachment) had been packaged, nobody would be able to stop the legislators from going ahead with the process except the governor himself, who financed the election of most of them.
The governor, a source said, received some briefings from his Deputy, Chief Goodluck Jonathan and some other aides on the situation on ground and was said to have pressed some buttons to stop the action.
It was not known whether the governor's return would influenced today's sitting in his favour as Vanguard could not reach the Speaker, Peremobowei Ebebi, to get his comments on the matter.
But as at yesterday's evening, the Speaker and some members of the House were said to be meeting at an undisclosed location in the state to perfect their strategeis for today's sitting.
According to a lawmaker: 'The House is still likely to go ahead with its action despite the governor's arrival", adding that 'as far as we know, the governor is still on leave, his 120 days leave notice has not expired".
A source close to the governor, however, said that the governor has taken charge of the situation. Only the impeached Deputy Speaker, Hon J. Foingha was with Alamieyeseigha when he spoke to the crowd of supporters at Government House, yesterday morning but the Chief Whip, Hon Robert Enogha was sighted later as he drove into Government House.
Governor Alamieyeseigha had, while addressing the people, said that those that derailed might have done so because of the suffocating pressure that was mounted on them, saying that now that he was back, he would use the opportunity to reconcile all the factions.
