We need Christians who'll be like Gani Fawehinmi - Evang. Matthew Owojaiye

For Evangelist Matthew Owojaiye of the Food for Total Man Ministry, based in Kaduna, there is need for all existing foundations to be destroyed and a new one erected for there to be a proper revival. Any church, according to him, that has not been revived, is not a true church of God.

For Evangelist Matthew Owojaiye of the Food for Total Man Ministry, based in Kaduna, there is need for all existing foundations to be destroyed and a new one erected for there to be a proper revival. Any church, according to him, that has not been revived, is not a true church of God.

Evangelist Owojaiye got born again in 1962 under the Sudan Interior Mission. He got filled with the Holy Ghost in 1972 at the University of Ibadan. He is married to his lovely wife and they are blessed with six kids.Having worked briefly with First Bank in Kaduna, he resigned in 1981 to serve God fully. He hails from Egbe, in Kogi State. He spoke to Daily Sun on some issues.

NBC ban
There are several areas to look at the problem. If you preach and you say people get healed immediately, you must be able to verify that actually the person being healed was actually sick before. Journalists should actually do investigative job. Go out and investigate these preachers and if you find out that what they claim to have done is fake, expose them.If NBC says don't preach miracles, then they have violated our religious rights. And this we will not take from NBC.

We will preach miracles because God does miracles. And people will keep getting healed and keep getting miracles. But if we agree that we shouldn't preach miracles, soon they will say we shouldn't preach that Jesus is the son of God.You see, we are faced with a bigger problem here.Bigger than what NBC could even imagine. On NTA Sokoto, NTA Maiduguri,Jigawa and Zamfara, you can't get air time to preach as a christian. And we say we are one Nigeria. These are not state-owned television stations mind you. Now tell me, what is NBC doing about this? As far as I am concerned, these states are denying us our fundamental rights as Nigerians.
Why do Nigerians go to church?
The church preaches repentance from sin
so that we may not go to hell. This was what we were preaching in the 60s, 70s and 80s.Today, the story is different. In those days, nobody tells you to claim big houses, cars, money and other material possessions. Then those who got born again had integrity, changed character and the fear of God in them. Today, people go to church to get God's favour. They are only after what they can get from God and that is all.The issue of being born again is not important to them. How can you get God's favour when you have not repented from you sins? They only come to church to seek something from God. Nigerians should learn how to serve God, it is only then He can give us what we demand of Him.It is a sin for anyone to use the name of God to make money. These days some pastors now make it obvious that you must have money before you can worship in their churches. We are no longer serving God but money. Very soon, God is going to cleanse the rot in the churches and He will lift up His men.

I can say to you that all those who are preaching money rather than repentance are not true men of God.

Today, we have churches everywhere, sins are multiplying. How can a nation like Nigeria, rated as the second most religious nation in the world, be the second most corrupt nation? Something is definitely wrong. We the preachers have to change our message to the people, because it is the message that will save us. A church should not be a place where customers are being sought after. It should be a place that represents God and says what God wants. But because our people want large numbers in their churches, they now preach what the people want to hear.
Solutions to our problems

Gani Fawehinmi and the late Tai Solarin are not pastors but social reformers. Why can't we get Christians who will toe the lines of these great men? We pray a lot in this country and that is what is still keeping us together. Every part of our society has been stained by corruption. Corruption has eaten deep into the fabrics of our society. From the religious angle, the preachers should live a clean life and preach it so that it can extend to the larger society. This country needs a new foundation for it to have a proper growth.
