The United States government has donated 20,000 dollars for the construction of facilities at the biggest Liberian refugee camp in Nigeria, an official statement by the US embassy here said.
LAGOS (AFP) - The United States government has donated 20,000 dollars for the construction of facilities at the biggest Liberian refugee camp in Nigeria, an official statement by the US embassy here said.
The money, provided on Tuesday through the Ambassador's Fund for Refugees, will be used for the construction of latrines and bathrooms at the Oru-Ijebu refugee camp located in southwest of the country, it said.
The Ambassador's Fund for Refugees is administered annually based on the need for assistance of refugee camps worldwide.
"The gesture is to improve the living conditions for those who would remain after the current organized mass repatriation of some of the 6,000 refugees mostly Liberians in the camp by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)," the text said.
The project, to be implemented by the Nigerian Red Cross, which is working closely with the UNHCR on the refugee situation, is expected to be completed at the end of next month, it said.
Liberians, Sierra Leonians, Rwandans, DR Congo nationals and Sudanese are in the Oru-Ijebu camp, set up in 1990 to receive thousands of Liberians who fled the war in their country.
