Foul stench oozes from crashed Bellview plane

LAGOS - THE Navigational Aids Flight Inspection Surveillance (NAFIS) hanger at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, which currently plays host to dismembered parts of the ill-fated Bellview Boeing 737-200 aircraft that crashed at Lisa, was like a mal-functional morgue yesterday, as stench of human remains pervaded the air.

Were the families of victims allowed in there, perhaps the place would have witnessed another round of wailing and gnashing of teeth.

With yesterday's conclusion of investigations at the crash site by the Accident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIPB), journalists were invited by the bureau for a briefing which was hurriedly conducted because of the foul environment.

Although the hangar was being fumigated to subdue the stench in view of the briefing, it just couldn't be suppressed, what with the charred human remains that got grounded and stuck in the dismembered aircraft parts.
It was an obvious case of no bodies, but strong stench of human remains, and noticing the discomfort of everyone present, AIPB Director, Mr. Angus Ozoka, had to hurriedly pass the information he had for the public to round off the session.
The impact of the crash which did not only cause the dismemberment of bodies of passengers aboard the aircraft, but also ground them into unseen substance, may have also affected the black boxes, as only their casings found at the crash site were shown to press men.

According to Mr. Ozoka, the black boxes may have suffered serious disfiguration on impact which squeezed out the casings.
Addressing journalists after conducting them round the aircraft parts arranged in the normal form they would have appeared on the aircraft, Ozoka said, with the conclusion of investigation, the crash site had been handed over to Ogun State Government.

He said the black boxes, the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), of the aircraft were yet to be found, but was quick to add that would not halt further investigation into the crash.
Ozoka, however, appealed to members of the public who may have stumbled on the black boxes to return them to either the AIPB or other relevant agencies under the Aviation Ministry.
