Against the backdrop of criticisms that have trailed the exclusion of Obafemi Martins from the list of the five nominees for the prestigious Globacom/Caf African Footballer of the Year award, former Eagles skipper, Henry Nwosu, has said the Inter striker did not deserve to make the shortlist.

"Although Martins is doing well at his club, the other five short-listed candidates have an edge over him," argued Nwosu.

"Apart from Eto'o and the Moroccan nominee (Marouane Chamakh) who have also been outstanding at their various clubs, the other nominees, apart from doing well at their various club sides , all helped their countries to qualify for the World Cup. If you take that fact into consideration, you will see that Obafemi is behind them."

He, therefore, advised Nigerians "to stop putting sentiment into this matter and try to look at the whole exercise objectively.''
Nwosu insisted that his statement should "not be interpreted that I do not like Obafemi. He is a great player who has the prospect of becoming an African Footballer of the Year as well as the World Footballer of the Year in the near future".

According to Nwosu, "thank God Obafemi is still a very young player. His future is very bright, and he should take solace in the fact that his time will come. This is not yet his time," he told Kickoff.
