THE internal crises rocking the Oyo state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW assumed a new dimension over the weekend as eleven prominent members of the union were expelled for alleged anti-union activities by the National Headquarters of the union.
IBADAN - THE internal crises rocking the Oyo state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers NURTW assumed a new dimension over the weekend as eleven prominent members of the union were expelled for alleged anti-union activities by the National Headquarters of the union.
The union has been in crisis since 2003 with the former Chairman, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola a.k.a Tokyo leading a faction of the union while Alhaji Abubakar Tawa, the incumbent Chairman of the state NURTW is leading another faction.
The union has witnessed series of bloody clashes in various motor parks in the state especially in Ibadan metropolis forcing the police to station armed policemen at strategic motor parks in Ibadan including Molete and Iwo road.
However, the National Secretariat of the union in a letter dated October 19 2005 with reference number NURTW/NHQ/A.15/Vol.3/87 confirmed the suspension of six members of the union.
The letter, entitled," Confirmation of Expulsion and signed by the Secretary General of the Union, Alhaji Mohammed Shuwa II and dated 19th October 2005 said, 'I wish to acknowledge the receipt of your letter reference number NURTW/OYSC/CIR.01/VOL.334 of September 14 2005 and to confirm the expulsion of the following members for damaging union's properties and involvement in anti-union activities".
According to the General Secretary those who were expelled include, Lateef Salako a.k.a Eleweomo, Morufu Raimi a.k.a Ogoja, Saliu Oyekanmi a.k.a Idi Amin, Akeem Raimi a.k.a OLorunkemi, Taiwo Adesanya and Waidi Adeniyi.
Another letter signed by the Deputy General Secretary of the union on behalf of the General Secretary, Alhaji Mohamed Amoo also listed five others whose expulsion were confirmed by the union in the letter dated 21st of October 2005.
They are Abideen Olajide a.k.a Ejigbo, Oriade Adeleke, Asimiyu a.k.a Ajonamaku, Mukaila Lamidi a.k.a Auxiliary and one Alani a.ka Ecomog.
The letter with reference number NURTW/NHQ/A.15/VOL 3/90 read, 'I am instructed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter ref number NURTW/OYSC/CIR.01/VOL.3335 of September 14 2005 and to inform you that in view of the gravity of the offence committed by the following members which is contrary to article 15 sub section 15 page 22 of the constitution of the union, the expulsion from NURTW is hereby ratified".
