Detained National Coordinator of the Oodua People's Congress, Chief Gani Adams, has approached a Lagos High Court asking it to grant him temporary freedom.
In his application for bail filed by his lawyer, Mr. Oluwole Kehinde, Adams is asking the court to admit him and two others- Chief Oyinlola Awe and Chief Wahab Isiaka- to bail pending their arraignment in court.
The application, dated October 28, was supported by a 15-paragraph affidavit, which was deposed to by one Akanni Segun.
The OPC leader also urged the court to urgently hear the application in the interest of justice.
Adams, the National Leader of OPC, Dr Frederick Fasehun, and nine others were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates' Court on Thursday for their alleged involvement in conspiracy to murder, murder, malicious damage to property and rioting. They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The accused were said to have committed the offences at Iyana Ipaja, Lagos on October 21, during which six persons were reportedly burnt to death and about 20 vehicles were set ablaze.
But Adams and the two claimants had told the court that the police's application did not disclose any reasonable grounds for remanding them in prison.
The police had in the application, urged the court to remand the accused in prison custody, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution and their arraignment at the high court.
The presiding magistrate, Chief Magistrate George Isaac, had, however, in his ruling, remanded them in Kirikiri Maximum Prisons and adjourned the matter till November 21.
