Jilted woman abducts ex-lover's sister

The saying that hell hash no fury like a woman scorned was aptly demonstrated in Lagos recently when a jilted 31-year-old woman, Miss Evelyn Obueze, allegedly abducted her estranged lover's sister and kept the hapless victim for 13 days.

The saying that hell hash no fury like a woman scorned was aptly demonstrated in Lagos recently when a jilted 31-year-old woman, Miss Evelyn Obueze, allegedly abducted her estranged lover's sister and kept the hapless victim for 13 days.

In what police sources at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos said was an act of revenge on her ex-lover, Evelyn was said to have travelled down to Nigeria from her residence in Pakistan to arrange the abduction of Miss Chinyere Chukwu, whose brother, Raphael, had earlier quit the relationship for unknown reasons.

After the lovers split in Pakistan where they had lived together, Evelyn allegedly moved to abduct Chinyere from Lagos to Cotonou, Benin Republic, where she was kept for almost two weeks.

The jilted woman was said to have organised the abduction to also press for the refund of N1.5 million she allegedly spent on her former boyfriend.

Chinyere told our correspondent at the SCID on Thursday that she got a telephone call on the morning of December 27 from Raphael, informing her that Evelyn was on her way to Nigeria and would stay at their house for one day.

Unknown to Raphael, his estranged lover had worked out a ploy to forcefully retrieve the money from her estranged boyfriend by abducting Chinyere.

When Evelyn arrived, she stayed at their home in Okota, a suburb of Lagos. The following day, she begged Chinyere to accompany her to the market to purchase some items for her family a request the unsuspecting girl obliged.

The next day, they both travelled to Badagry, where they were to collect money from a friend of Evelyn's before proceeding to the market.

'When we got there, we met a man who took Evelyn outside for about 30 minutes. They came back and said they would have to go to another place to collect the money. Since I had no cause to doubt my brother's friend, I followed them there," Chinyere recollected.

They went in a chartered car, which soon took them across the border, and according to Chinyere, 'it was when we got to a shanty house which I was told was in Cotonou that I knew I was in trouble."

She explained that some six hefty men joined them in the house and it was then that Evelyn told Chinyere that she had been abducted and would not be released unless her brother paid the sum of N1.5 million which she gave him for a business transaction.

In the course of the confinement, Evelyn called Raphael in Pakistan and warned that his sister might be killed if the debt was not paid.

Raphael in turn called a relative, Henry, in Lagos to confirm the development. Thereafter, his family made contact with Evelyn and begged her to release Chinyere.

When this failed, they turned to the police for help.

In the course of investigation, the police contacted Evelyn and sought Chinyere's release but when their pleas failed, they arrested her mother.

This development scared Evelyn, who quickly returned the abducted girl to Nigeria on January 10.

Spokesman of the state police command, Mr. Emmanuel Ighodalo (SP), told our correspondent that the police had declared Evelyn wanted and were also looking for her accomplices.
