Tragedy struck at the Ijeh Police Barracks Obalende, Lagos in the early hours of Wednesday when a loaded rifle kept by a police inspector attached to a unit of the mobile police force in Lagos, exploded, killing his 18-year old daughter in the process.
The incident which occurred between 5:00am and 6:00am caused a stir in the barracks as the residents woke up early following the chilling cries of the deceased family.
The mobile police inspector reportedly retired from work on the fateful day and kept the rifle which was cocked, on the table and went to sleep with his wife in their one room accommodation while their children, including the deceased girl, slept in another corner of the room.
However, one of the children in his sleep, hit the table where the gun was kept and it suddenly exploded, killing the girl instantly.
At first, it was not clear to the family what happened, as they could not easily discovered that the girl had been killed as she was thought to be sleeping when the explosion occurred.
When her mother tried to wake her up, she discovered that blood was streaming down from her neck and the mother's alarm woke up the residents of the barracks.
Friends and associates of the inspector as well as sympathizers were on Thursday, seen trooping into the room to commiserate with the family after the Inspector had reportedly lodged the matter at the Ikoyi Police Station.
However, the Lagos State Police spokesman, Emmanuel Ighodalo told Saturday Independent on the phone, that he was not aware of the incident.
