Bellview crash: Anxiety grips aviation workers

THERE was a disconsolate atmosphere among aviation workers at the local wing of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos yesterday.

LAGOS - THERE was a disconsolate atmosphere among aviation workers at the local wing of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos yesterday.

Many of the private airlines' workers wore mournful looks. One elderly staff of Chanchangi Airlines, blurted what probably captured the feelings of many of the workers: ' This our aviation work is very dangerous".
The usually busy counter of Bellview Airlines at the departure hall was deserted. A man who spoke to Vanguard at the counter said that officials of the airline were not on duty as a result of the crash involving one of their Abuja-bound aircrafts last Saturday.

There were fears yesterday afternoon that the leader of the Oodua Peoples Congress ( OPC) Dr. Fredrick Fasehun who was arrested last Saturday by security operatives may have been aboard the ill-fated aircraft together with those who arrested him. This fear was expressed yesterday in Lagos by a close associate of Dr Fasehun, who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity at the local wing of the Lagos airport. He said investigations so far carried by Dr Fasehun's associates point to the fact that he may have been taken on board the Abuja bound flight by the security operatives who picked him up earlier in the day.
A relative of one of the passengers aboard the aircraft Mr Eze Oguji who was still in a state of shock, apparently couldn't believe yet that the aircraft had crashed.
