3 policemen arraigned for stealing arms, ammunition


THREE police constables were on Wednesday arraigned before a Lokoja Chief Magistrate's court for breaking into police armoury and carting away several arms and ammunition.

LOKOJA - THREE police constables were on Wednesday arraigned before a Lokoja Chief Magistrate's court for breaking into police armoury and carting away several arms and ammunition. The prosecution said one of the accused, Akingbade Ojowu, was on the run, while the two others, Isaac Aiyegbowu and Orogun Theophilus were in custody.

The trio, all of Gboloko police station, in Bassa local government area of Kogi, were charged with conspiracy, house breaking and theft.
When the case was mentioned on Wednesday, the prosecuting police officer, Insp. Abdulrahman Ibrahim, applied for adjournment because investigation had not been concluded.

He urged the court not to grant the accused bail in view of the enormity of the crime.
In her ruling, Magistrate Angelina Salihu, ordered the accused to be remanded in Dekina prisons and adjourned hearing to Dec. 6.
In a related development, two riot policemen serving with the Kogi Command have appeared before another Lokoja Chief Magistrate's court charged with assault and theft.

Prosecution said they attacked beat and stole N13,500, from one Abdullahi Adamu of Damaturu.
The prosecution alleged that the accused, Constable Ajewole, 20, and Cpl. Christopher Enogheghase, 27, beat up Adamu, tore his shirt and forcefully collected his money on Sept. 25, outside the premises of Premier Hotel, Lokoja.

Prosecution said Adamu had gone to the hotel to book accommodation for the night, and not satisfied with the facilities, decided to go to another hotel, but ran into the accused outside the gate, who pounced on him and snatched the money.
Counsel to the accused applied for their bail.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Florence Faniyi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N10,000 and a surety each, in like sum.
She adjourned the case to Nov. 29.
