A Nigerian drug dealer has been caught in possession of 2.5kg of heroin, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.
Senior Superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht described the 44-year-old man as a drug "kingpin" and called his arrest a "major breakthrough".
She said the man was arrested in Bedfordview, in eastern Johannesburg, just after 2pm on Wednesday by detectives of the Gauteng organised crime unit.
Martins-Engelbrecht said the drugs confiscated were probably worth R1-million and likely had been imported for distribution on the local market.
"Despite its cost - heroin is very expensive - the drug is a growing menace on our streets," she said.
The man would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.
