WARRI - ARMED youths struck recently at a private company in Ughelli, Delta State, disarmed the two mobile policeman on duty and disappeared with their guns: an AK-47 and K-2 rifles, containing 28 and 20 rounds of live ammunition respectively.

The bandits had a field day vandalizing the property of the company after the policemen were disarmed. They stole an undisclosed sum of money, two 21 Panasonic colour television sets, a Samsung compact disc player and other things but the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Udom Ekpoudom, told Vanguard, yesterday, that it was strange for an armed policeman to be disarmed by an unarmed person.

He said that it was not even armed robbers that went to the company but youths from a particular community and any policeman who loses his gun on an illegal duty would be made to face the consequences.

Meanwhile, the Area Commander of the Police in Delta Central, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu J. Mbu has appealed to the community leaders to prevail on the youths to return the guns with ammunition intact to the police in their own interest.

Senior citizens in the area, including Sir John Odiemor, who urged the invading youths from Ugolo village to surrender the weapons, had condemned the attack on the company and disarming of the policemen.

The policemen who were injured during the attack were rushed to the hospital and their bills were reportedly borne by Chief Olotu.
Investigation showed that Chief Olotu acquired a piece of land from Ugolo community sometime ago to build his company, which provided employment for some of the villagers, but the youths in their bid to fleece him, had been making several demands. It was his refusal to succumb to the further extortion of money from him that led to the invasion of the company.
