A brother to Governor Jolly Nyame of Taraba State, Mr. Godwin Nyame, is among 15 top government officials arrested in Jalingo at the weekend by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Nyame, who is also the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Works, was arrested alongside a Special Assistant to the Governor, Mr. Helkiah Bubajoda Mafindi, on allegation of financial misconduct.
Others arrested include two former Accountant-Generals, a former Chairman of the state Primary Educ-ation Board, Mallam Dayama and Chairman Wukari Local Government Council, Mr. Joseph Aji.
Apart from the arrested officials, some other top government functionaries have been placed on the EFCC wanted list. They include the state Commi-ssioner for Finance, Mr. Danladi Baido, a former Finance Commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tutare, and Engr. Hamza Farouk.
Sources at Police headquarters, Jalingo said the arrested persons would soon be moved to Lagos for further investigation.
The arrest of the government officials was greeted with jubilation by residents of the state capital who accused the officials of impoverishing the state.
Meanwhile, most top government officials and top civil servants in the state are now keeping low profile and some have even gone underground for fear of being arrested.
Also, most flashy cars appear to have disappeared from the streets of Jalingo as their owners, most of whom are public officials, might have parked them.
