For the third time this year, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would be laying off about 1,500 workers this week.
According to our source, this is the outcome of the Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) meeting held last Wednesday in Abuja.
It was said that the instruction handed down to the apex bank was that the affected staff should be given their letters of sack or transfer as soon as they get to the entrance of the bank today.
It would be recalled that the last downsizing carried out by the apex bank affected about 300 staff. As at the time of filing this report, no reason was given for the latest sack.
Our source disclosed further that as at last Friday, the affected staff had been told to start packing, while awaiting their letters.
The retrenchment would leave the bank with about 3,500 staff out of the present 5,000 workforce.
CBN Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr Tony Edeh, confirmed the sack in a telephone chat Sunday. He however said the figure was not that much. Yet, he refused to volunteer any figure.
He said a statement to that effect had already been issued by his office.
