ASABA, Delta State, was recently thrown into confusion and mourning when an 8-yr-old girl was allegedly raped and beaten to death by a middle-aged man.
The girl (names withheld) was reported to have entered a nearby bush along with her peers to fetch firewood penultimate Thursday, when the man, identified as Sunday Ogbolu, an ex-convict followed and over-powered her while her friends escaped.
The bush according to investigations, had served as a fertile ground for Fulani herdsmen and their families who in their nomadic lifestyle, had built ram-shackle camps in the area.
Saturday Champion gathered that when her friends escaped, they alerted passers-by who then mobilized and arrested the suspect after several hours of search.
Ogbolu, an indigene of Ishagu community, few kilometres to Ogwashi Uku, is already being held at the Ogwashi-Uku divisional police station.
Police authorities at the station have confirmed his arrest and detention.
Father of the deceased, Abdul Karim in a chat with Saturday Champion, said he is yet to get over the tragic death of his daughter: "I no know wetin this man kill my pikin for . Only Allah I go cry to".
