Globacom Launches Fibre Optic Transmission

Second National Operator, Globacom, is set to further enhance voice and data transmission for mobile and fixed telephone operations, as it commences transmission service on its fibre optic ring.

Chief Operating Officer, Glo Mobile, Mr Mohammed Jameel, said the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano axis made history, as it became the first route to use the Globacom fibre optic transmission.

The sophisticated infrastructure was launched on December 8 last year, with the roll-out of Globacom service in Kano and the Kano-Abuja route. Subsequently, all calls on the Globacom network from Kano to Abuja are being routed through the fibre optic ring, while the microwave backbone serves as back up.

Jameel said other parts of the country would soon be connected to the high bandwidth fibre optic ring. Notably, the Lagos – Epe – Ijebu /Ode – Ore – Benin and the second route which covers the Lagos–Sagamu– Abeo-kuta–Owode– Ibadan axis, currently under construction, are almost ready for operation.

The link from Ibadan – Ilorin – Minna-Abuja–Makurdi– Port-Harcourt–Owerri–Enugu– Onitsha – Benin would be completed before September.

Explaining intricate details of the structure of the ring, Jameel said the infrastructure travels a ring topology, to provide a self-healing network, with an every inch back-up of various routes. This ensures that if there is any problem at a point, traffic would be re-directed and connection automatically re-established by a parallel loop in the ring.

According to him, calls originating from and terminating on the Glo Network would not only be crisp and clear by reason of the robust nature of the fibre optic technology, but would also not suffer breaks and drops.
