Alamieyeseigha leaves prison, now under house arrest

The embattled Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was on Thursday freed from a London prison after almost two weeks behind cell.

The embattled Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was on Thursday freed from a London prison after almost two weeks behind cell.

He will however remain under house arrest and not to go three miles close to any United Kingdom port or airport.

He is also required to 'report daily to a police station known to the court," while his travel documents remained with Scotland Yard.

Alamieyeseigha's release by the Southwark Crown Court followed the perfection of his bail conditions.

One of the conditions was the payment of £500,000 securities.

The Bow Street Magistrate Court, Westminster, London which ordered Alamieyeseigha's detention on 28 September, following his arrest by the London Metropolitan Police for alleged money laundering, confirmed to our correspondent that the securities had been paid.

'Yes, the securities were paid this morning and we have already sent a release notice to the Brixton Prison," a court official who refused to disclose her name told our correspondent.

'I'm sorry, I cannot give you my name, but I can answer your question regarding the payment of the securities you asked about," the lady stated.

Alamieyeseigha's bail application at the Southwark Crown Court was granted on Tuesday but he was sent back to his prison cell because the bail processes could not be completed before the close of work at the Bow Street Magistrate Court, Westminster, London.
