Protests trail Egwu's wife selection of students for US training


THIRTY-Seven (37) school children from Ebonyi State on Wednesday left the state for leadership training in United States of America amidst wide protest of bias selection by the committee under the office of the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Eunice Ukamaka Egwu.

ABAKALIKI - THIRTY-Seven (37) school children from Ebonyi State on Wednesday left the state for leadership training in United States of America amidst wide protest of bias selection by the committee under the office of the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Eunice Ukamaka Egwu.

The is the third batch of such vacation organised by her office which is said to conduct examination for the students to select the best to qualify for the training although it is being alleged to be influenced behind the door by an aide at the Governor's wife office

One of the lucky students who spoke to Vanguard a few minutes before their departure, Azu Adanaya explained that she had not travelled outside Okposi, her LGA. The girl, a JSS 3 student said her parents are farmers and could not believe the fact that she was really travelling abroad.

Azu, who looked so excited to talk managed to state "God is wonderful, they told us that if any of us in our local government gets first position in the exam they set for us, he/she will go to America, I didn't know it could be me, I had never slept on foam before but I am now going to America, I thank sister Ukamaka Egwu".

The children were led on the two-week vacation by chairman of the vacation committee, Mrs. Chinwe Okolo and chief press secretary to the governor's wife, Mr. Anya Okorie.

She said "None of them is a child of anybody in government of the rich people among us, we conduct exams to select them, incidentally, they emerged" she stated.

Mrs.Okolo said that such exposure is tailored to ignite their potentials and that the state governor had given scholarship to the 71 children who have benefited from the training, so that they would study in an international school in the state to sustain whatever they would have learnt from the trip.

She said "They will during the trip interact with American children, undertake training on leadership, American democracy, computer and internet usage, though it will be a brief, we intend to let them get gist of the much that is possible" .
