258 Nigerians deported in two months


NO fewer than 258 Nigerians have had their dream of seeking greener pastures in foreign lands aborted within the last two months.

The Nigerians, of both sexes, were deported from their various domiciles abroad between August and September 2005.

The Guardian leant that they were deported for immigration offences such as illegal entry, fake documents and other criminal offences.

Statistics from the Nigerian Immigration Service revealed that 200 of them were deported through the Murtala Muhammad Airport, Lagos, while the remaining were deported through other airports across the country.

The breakdown shows 135 were deported from Libya, 87 from Spain, 24 from Switzerland four from Germany, 15 from South Africa and three from Italy.

A source who spoke to The Guardian however said that the deportees action tends to portray the image of the country in bad light.

He noted that all the deportees were taken to the Nigerian Immigration Service head office at Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos for further interrogation.

The Guardian also learnt that the list of deportees for the month of October has not been released.

He stated that the Federal Government was doing everything possible to make sure that travelling documents of intending travellers are screened very well to ascertain their genuiness.

The police in Lagos had recently swooped on the notorious Oluwole Street, Lagos and arrested printers of fake international passports and other false documents.

The deportation of Nigerians from foreign countries has risen significantly in recent months, with many of them claiming that frustration and seeming hardship in the country necessitated their predicament.
