Eguavoen begs Okocha to stay on


Skipper Austin Okocha made it known that he would be playing his last World Cup for Nigeria if the Super Eagles qualify for the Germany World Cup in 2006. He also said that he would wave a final bye to the national team after the world Cup.

But moments after the disaster that hit Nigeria when Angola spoiled the fun, the technical crew of the Eagles led by Austin Eguavoen beseeched the Bolton Wanderers captain not to throw in the towel. A reliable source who was privy to the meeting said that they begged Okocha not to announce his retirement from the team until after the Nations Cup in Egypt.

'Okocha was not happy that Nigeria could no longer go to the World Cup and he wanted to resign. But Eguavoen begged him, hugged him, pampered him
and told him to hold on till after the Nations Cup", our source said. The source said that it was an emotional scene as Eguavoen hugged, begged him over and over again not to let go. Though the skipper is yet to make a formal statement on his future for the national team, we gathered that he was still considering in saying bye to concentrate on club engagements
