Investigating Police Officers from the London Metropolitan Police yesterday arrived Nigeria to continue their investigation of the money laundering charges preferred against Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.

Investigating Police Officers from the London Metropolitan Police yesterday arrived Nigeria to continue their investigation of the money laundering charges preferred against Bayelsa State Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.


Alamieyeseigha arrested at London Heathrow airport September 15 is facing a three-count charge of money laundering to the tune of £1.8 million. He is currently remanded at Brixton Prison pending when his bail application sails through at Southwark Crown court.


The Metropolitan Police operatives, who are working in collaboration with officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), THISDAY gathered, immediately on arrival in Abuja yesterday started going through tons of documents.


The Crown Prosecution Service had during the resumed hearing of Alamieyeseigha's bail application last Friday, asked for four weeks adjournment to enable Metropolitan Police officers travel to Nigeria this week for further investigations. The officers will go to the field today and may arrive Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State anytime this week.


The Specialist Directorate of the New Scotland Yard handling the case, also at the last hearing, announced the freezing of £10millon  assets allegedly belonging to the governor.


Alamieyeseigha's hope of regaing freedom was dashed at the Friday hearing   as one of the sureties he presented failed police screeening.
Although the resumed hearing of the main trial comes up November 3, the Bayelsa governor may be released on bail if he fully satisfies the bail conditions when his application comes up again tomorrow at the Southwark Crown Court.
