Blood flowed Thursday in Lagos when armed robbers allegedly in military uniform stormed a commercial bank and rained bullets on anybody in sight. By the time the attack ended, two people were killed.

Saturday Sun gathered that the bandits, who were armed with sophisticated weapons, had invaded the Victoria Island, Lagos branch of the bank in a commando style. But they met their match in police which returned fire and dislodged them after a long gun battle.

It was gathered that the battle was tense, as sound of sporadic gunshots filled the air. An eye-witness said it was like full scale war.

As the robbers, who came for the operation in two speed boats were escaping through the lagoon, policemen pursued them in an helicopter carrying the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Mr John Haruna. But they eventually made good their escape.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ade Ajakaiye said the robbery was foiled, adding that the bandits came with sophisticated rifles.
The attack was the third this year in banks on Victoria Island by bandits in army uniform
There had been six other cases of bandits in military uniform raiding banks in other parts of Lagos with sophisticated rifles. The development led the police to refurbish two abandoned armoured cars with which they were able to keep the robbers at bay.
