Eagles stand-in skipper Nwankwo Kanu has said the players are devastated that they will not feature at next year's World Cup in Germany.
'The whole team is sad," said Kanu after the match against Zimbabwe in Abuja.
'Not qualifying for the World Cup is a big loss but we have to look ahead and see how we can rebuild."
Kanu advised for subsequent tournaments, Nigeria must be better prepared.
'We cannot continue to train for two, three days before big games. We need to be better prepared," Kanu said.
He will also not blame the players for Nigeria's failure to fly to Germany.
'We have sacrificed a lot for the country and we will continue to do so anything we are called upon to serve Nigeria," he said.
The players were too shocked to talk to the press and preferred to make their way to the team bus after a short meeting in the dressing room.
