Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon. Boyelayefa Debekeme, was Wednesday quizzed by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos. He was thereafter granted bail.
Debekeme was taken into custody in Port Harcourt where he went to honour EFCC's invitation after an attempt to arrest him in Yenagoa failed. He was immediately moved to the EFCC headquarters, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Before being granted bail, the embattled Speaker, allegedly filled EFCC asset declaration form and gave assurance to facilitate the cooperation of other members of the State House Assembly that may be invited by the commission in the course of their investigation.
The Speaker's arrest came a day after he returned to the country from the United Kingdom where he spent three weeks.
Though no reason has been given for his arrest, Daily Sun gathered that it might not be unconnected with the present travails of the Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who is facing money laundering charges in London.
Before the Speaker gave himself to the EFCC, youths and colleagues at the legislators quarters were said to have attempted to prevent him from being taken away by the commission's operatives.
