The Rivers State government is now set to sign the contract for the construction of the multi-billion naira Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo link road.
Already, a meeting between the contracting firm, PGH and the state government has been scheduled to hold soon.
Also, the contract for the construction of a road linking Opobo II to the mainland, expected to cost N90 million has been awarded while the hospital at Opobo II is being renovated and expanded to include a mortuary.
Rivers State Deputy Governor, Sir Gabriel Toby disclosed this at a New Year Party he hosted in honour of Chiefs, Elders and People of Opobo kingdom at his country home in Opobo.
Sir Toby who said the road projects were in fulfillment of Governor Odili's pledge to link all riverine communities to the mainland attributed the desire to engage a reputable contractor as one of the reasons that delayed the award of the contract.
He lauded Governor Peter Odili for his magnanimity and commitment to carrying Opobo people along in the scheme of things, adding that the only way the people can show appreciation was to support his government and policies.
The deputy governor enumerated key projects embarked upon by the state government in the area, noting "since 1999, we've tried to put several facilities on ground" and promised that government would continue to do more so long as its efforts were appreciated.
Government, he said, inherited decayed infrastructures and several uncompleted projects all over the state and appealed for patience and understanding on the part of the people to enable government achieve set goals.
Sir Toby who paid glowing tributes to King Jaja I, of Opobo for his struggle for the kingdom and the Niger Delta, called for greater unity among the people for the kingdom to move forward.
In his speech, the Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja said as future leaders, youths should be supported by the highly placed, and stressed the need to empower and engage those repentant youths so that they can effectively shun cultism and other anti-social behaviours.
King Jaja praised the deputy governor for providing the opportunity for the Opobo people to interact, pointing out that the Council of Alapu was doing a lot to unite the people of the kingdom.
He advised the people not to be self-centred but should work for the improvement of the kingdom, saying that already structures that would facilitate the development of the area has been put in place.
