The Minister of Education Mrs. Nora Chinwe Obaji has commenced the presentation of certificates to the over 600,000 teachers that have registered with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) at the flagged off of the distribution of certificate to professional member's ceremony.

The Minister said the presentation of the certificates demonstrates the formal recognition of teaching as a registrable profession like its counterparts in other professions.

She however, acknowledged the immense contribution of the council to the development of education and teaching professions within a short period of its establishment. The ceremony also witnessed the launching of the first Teachers Professional Journal as well as the commissioning of the council's head office complex.

Registrar and Chief Executive of TRCN, Mr. Ciwar Musa Anjikwi said the council witnessed a lot of obstacles ranging from finance, fake registration outfits in addition to opposition from university and polytechnics lecturers at the commencement of the registration exercise.

According to Ciwar, the councils was able to surmount all these obstacles through a lot of sensitisation and dialogue with the teachers to ensure the practitioners see reasons to protect their professional values and ethical responsibilities, which he said, governs every profession.

He noted that the registration has become necessary with the 'inflow of all manners of people in the teaching profession", adding 'registration is the only way you can identify and certify who are real teachers, regulate and control the profession as well as reposition to meet the challenges of the global society".

It would be recalled that the exercise was initially marred by the controversy that trailed the registration as independent bodies like the Institute of Certified Teachers of Nigeria (ITCON) was consulted to do the registration of teachers and the teaching profession in Nigeria.
