Apostle Eugene E. Ogu, the General overseer of Abundant life Evangel Mission (ALEM) and President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Rivers State has hit out at the Federal Government and Christian leaders in government for turning the blind eye to the provocative actives and utterances of Islamic fanatics over the years, saying if the spate is unchecked it could lead to the truncation of the current democracy or more serious implications which may effect the unity of the country.
The clergyman came out with this, among others, while addressing the press in his office in Port Harcourt on Monday, 10th January, 2005. In his frank assessment, Apostle Ogu warned that a day would come when Christians would reach their tether's end, a situation that could be preposterous for Nigeria.
Reeling out several gory tales of woe which Moslems in the North have brought upon Christendom, the clergyman said Christians have no peace to worship God in the Northern part of Nigeria because Moslem fanatics are either killing them under one pretext or burning down their churches. Sadly, the governors of states like Kano, Adamawa, Bauchi and Sokoto encourage these fanatics in their violent evangelism of Islam, he noted.
Evangelist Ogu, also expressed worries that many ministers of the Gospel flout the laws of the land. One that he sees as offensive is the indiscriminate pasting of posters on walls and other public places, in contravention of the laws of Rivers State on Sanitation. He added that those PFN and called on the government to take the bull by the horns and implement enacted laws to the letter, observing that any compromise by the officials would portray the government in bad light.
On a national scale once again, the PFN President has strongly appealed to all Christians to participate in the forth coming 2005 national Population Census in the country, saying it is imperative for all traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials youth and women leaders who are Christians to mobilize effectively to ensure that all Christians are counted. This in his view will properly show that Nigeria is a Christian country and that those who think Christianity has no place in Nigeria is actually misinformed.
To make a success of the Population Censes which the Christian leader described as a vital tool for national planning, he also tasked the authorities to spare no funds in bringing the best equipment available to ensure that no one is counted twice and that only human beings, not animals are counted.
Apostle Ogu described 2005 as a year in which God's grace will break new bounds for the country, stating matter-of-factly that the who plan ill for Nigeria will be surprised with how they will be dislocated. In addition, he revealed that so many shake-ups will take place in the political parties and that some of the 2007 gladiators that are on the scene now may not even see that year alive.
Continuing, he commended journalist for their courageous service in the advancement of democracy professionalism while praying for the continued grace of God upon them in view of the evil men's desire to keep the truth away from the public. The PFN President encouraged all members of the fourth estate of the realm to realize the importance of their professional service to mankind and assured them of God's protection if they seek to be upright on their jobs.
