Heroin seizure at Kabul airport: Three Nigerians have been arrested

Three Nigerians have been arrested at Kabul International Airport suspected of trying to smuggle more than 13kg of heroin, Afghan authorities say.

Three Nigerians have been arrested at Kabul International Airport suspected of trying to smuggle more than 13kg of heroin, Afghan authorities say.

Officials believe the drugs were headed for Europe.

Two Nigerians carrying more than 3kg of heroin were arrested on Tuesday, while another man was detained on Monday with 10kg of the drug, officials say.

All three had entered Afghanistan by land from Torkham in north-west Pakistan, airport officials said.

Opium capital

The man arrested on Monday was on his way to Dubai. Officials say he was found in possession of 10kg heroin which had been stashed in tomato juice cans and in the CD drive of a computer in his luggage.

All three men had visited Afghanistan before, Gen Aminullah, Kabul International Airport commander told the BBC.

If convicted of drug trafficking, the men could face lengthy prison terms.

Afghanistan is still the largest producer of opium in the world, accounting for almost 90% of supplies.

The UN has frequently voiced fears that Afghanistan could turn into a "narco-state" if it fails to bring the drug trade under control.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has pledged to reduce opium poppy farming by 30% during 2005.

The international community has spent millions of dollars on drug eradication programmes in Afghanistan since 2001, when the Taleban was ousted.
