Mile III market goes up in flames


Tension and anxiety went high amongst traders doing businesses within the Mile 3 main market as a section of the trading center caught fire. The unfortunate incident, according to the traders, started at about 3 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday January 11th 2005.

The unfortunate incident, according to the traders, started at about 3 p.m. yesterday, Tuesday January 11th 2005.

They told our man that the fire started from a private generating plant been put to use by a cool-room operator.

Unknown to the cool-room owner, the generating set put on, due to NEPA's usual power failure sent out flame of fire that mysteriously spread fourth and gutted all neighbouring stales.

Those interviewed at the scene said, but for the timely intervention of volunteers who are traders around the place, the fire would have done more unspeakable havoc and wreck on the entire Mile 3 market.

Although, The Midweek Telegraph had witnessed the presence of the State's Fire Service fighting to put a total stop to the flames, the traders insisted that they arrived shortly after the inferno had been abated.

Our man reports that those affected by the fire had refused to be consoled as they tried to cry their eyes out, while some made suicidal attempts, but held back by sympathizers.
Since last year Rivers State has been associated with January incessant fire raze.
