'No Regret Closing Down IBB's Bakery'

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) yesterday said it has no regret sealing up Maryam Babangida bakery in Minna, Niger State and 53 others across the country over the use of potassium bromate.

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) yesterday said it has no regret sealing up Maryam Babangida bakery in Minna, Niger State and 53 others across the country over the use of potassium bromate.

NAFDAC Director Establishment Inspectorate, Mrs. Doris Amalai, who disclosed this while answering questions from newsmen at Kumo in Akko Local Government area of the state after the grassroots consumer education and sensitisation programme, said the closing down of Babangida bakery has no political motive.

She said NAFDAC would continue to carry out its activities to safeguard the nation without given consideration to personalities. According to her, in Minna alone about seven bakeries were shut for the same offence.

She alleged that the affected bakers were using tablets as enhancer which is dangerous to health.

"We have so far closed 54 bakeries all over the country. We will close down seven bakeries in Minna including that of Babangida because of the use of potassium bromate. We saw it in their premises. So, the closure has no political motive," she said.

The director said potasium bromate causes cancer, kidney failure, loss of hearing and breakdown of vitamins.

Amalai stressed that the Babangida lawyers have taken up the issue and is being addressed.

The director said NAFDAC has destroyed fake drugs worth N10 billion in the past five years.

She advised consumers to be aware of fake drugs and report to NAFDAC Office those behind the circulation of such drugs.
