OWERRI - Three pregnant women were recently killed as the vehicle in which they were travelling to Owerri came under severe gunfire of armed robbers.
Vanguard investigations revealed that the vehicle, in which the women were travelling, ran into the siege laid by the robbers at Afor Ogbe, Ahiazu Mbaise local government area of the state.
Although the identity of the deceased persons could not be ascertained before going to press, all that could be said about their identities were that they hailed from Obowo and Otulu.
A woman, who wept uncontrollably at the sight of the slain women, confirmed that they were food stuff traders whose pregnancies were at varying stages of development.
"They were heading to Owerri at between 3.30 and 4 a.m when they ran into the blood thirsty robbers at Afor Ogbe.
There is no reason why these poor women, who were struggling to feed and pay the school fees of their children should be murdered in cold blood", the woman cried.
Another man, who identified himself, simply as John, for security reasons, not only confirmed that the women were travelling in a Mitsubishi L 300 commercial vehicle, but also said that the women died instantly.
"I heard the barrage of gunfire that ill-fated morning. From this ugly incident, we can safely say that the dare devil armed robbers operating in Imo State may have changed their strategy and focus to other local government areas", the man said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO), Mr. Isah Bala Mohammed, confirmed the incident but quickly added that his office was yet to get details of the incident.
