AWKA - A gang of armed robbers Saturday night invaded the Awka branch of a bank and carted away millions of Naira after shooting their way into the bank's strong rooms. The robbers who were armed with sophisticated weapons, including A.K. 47 riffles and chains of ammunition overpowered the policemen on duty and made straight to the bank's strong room.
However, there is conflict on the amount of money taken away by the robbers. While a police source quoted N12 million, officials of the bank said they were still assessing the loss.
Governor Chris Ngige and Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu visited the bank on Sunday.
According to reports, the robbers drove into the premises of the bank at about 2 a.m.in the morning shooting indiscriminately into the air frustrating any move to challenge them.
They were however challenged by five policemen on guards duty at the bank, but their superior fire power forced the policemen to flee. One of the policemen was said to have sustained injury on the leg.
Having over powered the policemen, the robbers ransacked and vandalized all the strong rooms in the bank and carted away money.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kolapo Shofoluwe said that a full scale investigation has been launched into the robbery incident. He said that some of the staff of the bank would be at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning.
