Bayelsa State Governor, Chief Deprieye Alamieyeseigha, (Video), was yesterday arrested in London.

Daily Sun gathered that the governor was picked in his London home in Edgeware, South-West London. He was said to have returned to London, from Germany, where he underwent a surgery, into the waiting hands of the London detectives.

Confirming the arrest last night, Mr. Dapo Ogunwusi, former editor of Tribune, who spoke from London, said that at the time he spoke with Daily Sun (10.20PM) the London policemen were still searching Alamieyeseigha's home in London.

He said that the governor's wife and son, who were with him during the arrest, were making frantic efforts to secure his release, adding that the duo, who do not know where the governor was taken to or being detained, were worried, especially over his health. They were said to have secured the services of a lawyer to secure his bail.

However, reacting yesterday in Yenagoa, Acting Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Preye Wariowei, said the alleged arrest of the governor was baseless and totally false.
He told Daily Sun that the story was the handwork of political opponents who wanted to smear the image of the governor in the eyes of the public, because of perceived political ambition in 2007.
He said the governor was being expected in Yenagoa at the weekend from abroad.
Another source close to the governor's family also said the story of the arrest was wicked and aimed to tarnish Alamieyeseigha's image.

The source said the governor had delayed his journey back to Yenagoa because he had undergone a surgical operation and due to the stress of traveling by air had to rest for sometimes, before returning home.

It would be recalled that three officials of the Bayelsa government were arrested by agents of the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC) about a week ago. Those arrested by EFCC were Commissioner of Finance, Solomon Apreala, Accountant General, Elder Steven Enamanu and a Special Adviser to the Governor, Elder Olaitari Ikemike.

They were arrested following a petition sent to EFCC by aggrieved parties over the award of contract for the construction of the new Governor's and Deputy Governor's Lodge.
